Innovative practices for STEM teaching and learning!
I am currently a part of a collaboration and learning circle hosted by Aavishkar - an NGO that seeks to revolutionize the way STEM is taught across India. The sessions are conducted by the founders of the organization that bring a wealth of knowledge on how to change STEM teaching in Indian classrooms to create an environment conducive to building critical thinking faculties among students. I have taken many hands-on and engaging practices from these sessions into my math classroom. Some of these are: ganit charchas (math talks), proof puzzles, teaching from first principles and relying on students’ pattern recognition abilities.
ATA was a 6 session training program, to upskill educators on their instructional proficiency. We learnt about effective teaching practices to improve student outcomes in our subject area as well as in the SEL metric. At ASB we were introduced to a number of different strategies to deal with behavioral and emotional issues that impact student learning. Some of these were: trauma informed learning, dealing with math anxiety, and behavioral management techniques. We got a chance to learn from the American Common Core Curriculum and their math practices. The training also provided me with the space to network with other educators across Mumbai and learn from their practices
Activity to build the mindset that "Anyone can do Math!"
